The Good Soldier: A Tale of Passion by Ford Madox Ford

5.0

No one is blameless, and Captain Ashburnham comes out on top.
Spoiler
Captain Ashburnham
It really doesn't seem to be his fault that he keeps having affairs. The narrator did him justice.

Leonora Ashburnham
The narrator makes it seem like everything was her fault! You can only control your own actions. I think the narrator was motivated by jealousy here. And I was happy that she ended up with Baynham!

The Girl
The narrator accuses her of being cruel, but she was led by Leonora and religion, not cruelty. I think the narrator is led by his love of Edward here. He wants him to have everything he wants. The girl wouldn't have gone mad if she didn't love Edward, and feeling for Leonora was a flimsy excuse.

Florence
I didn't mind how the narrator portrayed her. A flirt, an invalid, and a woman who cuckholds her husband. He was harsh at times, but you could tell that it was from his personal relationship with her.

The Narrator Himself
He comes off the worst of all.
