Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers

2.0

I was searching for something else at the library and ended up stumbling across this abridged version. It has one of my fave quotes/mottos I live by as the title!

If you’re the kind of person that has a fuck ton of mottos and phrases stuck to your walls, this might be for you. It has zingers (that’s meant to sound sarcastic, btw) like “I’ll handle it”, “it doesn’t matter”, “say yes to your universe”, “stop fighting your life”, and “you must become what you want to attract”.

Fortunately it’s a short book which gives an overview of the types of things people might be afraid of in life, with some mantras and basic exercises she believes will help you move from “pain to power”.

If you don’t want to read it but want a quick summary:
People feel fear because we’re human. You can’t move through it if you’re stuck believing you can’t handle whatever life throws at you. She suggests changing your vocabulary (from can’t to won’t etc), and to stop being a victim/blaming others and take ownership of your own life. [nb. I understand she’s talking about autonomy here but it could be a trigger for some with trauma as it may be read as “it’s my fault this happened”].

If you haven’t guessed, I’d say it’s a waste of an hour to read it unless you really do find someone telling you to draw lame charts and recite “Fear Truths” for a month helpful. If this had been condensed into a blog or article that basically focused on the whole “I can handle it” mantra, I’d rate it higher but, in this format, I’d say 2/5 is me feeling generous. I chose to spend my hour this way, so I won’t blame her/the book for feeling like I could have made better use of it... see, I’m growing!
