I picked this up after it was recommended to me from fans of [a:Lily Mayne|21321484|Lily Mayne|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1616920587p2/21321484.jpg]'s Monstrous series but this is vastly different and not really for me.
This takes place in a city that sits on the veil between our world and Faerie. For reasons that aren't explained, the veil broke or something and "monsters" and Fae made residence on the human side, even though it's still hidden from most humans. The ones that are aware of the Fae section of the city, across what is now known as The Barrier, still rarely cross because it's dangerous for humans.
These Fae aren't like any I've read before and are really more like monsters. They have wings that are bat-like, fangs, horns, and are much larger than average humans. There doesn't seem to be much magic besides innate extra-human abilities and then the veil itself. Overall, these aren't Fae to me and it's weird to use well-known characters like Maeve in your writing when you've changed all the established lore surrounding them.
My main issue with this is that the dialogue is juvenile and there is way too much time spent inside of Luca's head. Luca is a 25 year old human (as far as he knows) that is very much a mommy's boy and naive in a lot of ways, but especially relationships. His only major relationship at this point was with his old boss that he punched at his workplace when they broke up with got him fired resulting in homelessness. All very dramatic and this is before this book even starts. His best friend and rich kid, Alex, lets him stay in his lavish apartment but Luca isn't about to take advantage and looks for a job immediately. He accidentally ends up at The Barrier and decides he's just going to cross on a whim (despite his now-deceased mother outright demanding he never do so) and see if he can find a job on that side. The very FIRST place he asks, Cair is the owner of and offers him a job with a trial period. Little do we know, until the next chapter from Cair's POV, that Luca is his soulmate - known only because of the ~feelings Cair feels upon immediately seeing the human.
That is all beyond ridiculous and it only devolves from there.
