The Mistake by R.G. Angel, R.G. Angel

1.0

Hugo & Ava: She was wonderful... He was utterly disgusting.

Ava was always a woman who played it safe, kind-hearted and inexperienced, her best friend advises her to throw caution to the wind and be impulsive. On a girl's night out with friends, she does just that and meets a mysterious man named "Colton", whom she has an erotic one-night stand with. Weeks later, she agrees to be her best friend's "beard" (for those who don't know, he's closeted gay and needs to have a woman on his arm for appearances). She agrees to continue the farce of being his fiancée and meets his family of noble blood (the book is set in England). She meets his brother who is none other than "Colton", really named Hugo. Hugo believes that she targeted him because of his social status and is trying to use his brother for money, which isn't the case. Her one night stand results in a pregnancy with Hugo being the father.

I've ready many books with the "accidental pregnancy" trope. Hugo has to be THE worst MMC I have ever had the displeasure of reading. He was overly cruel and downright ugly. His actions and threatening Ava, as if she got herself pregnant were beyond reprehensible and mean. I just don't understand the cruelty he bestowed upon Ava or his brother. His anger with her was so unfounded, many of his gripes were a reach. He embarrassed her publicly, made her work for him and even professionally pimped her out to do work for his ex-girlfriend, and stressed her to the point of putting her in the hospital. Why???? Because he could... at least, that was his excuse. Hugo was a bully. The worst kind. He didn't want Ava or the child and didn't want anyone else to even care or like her. He was controlling and domineering, and he just made me sick. (For a preview, check out the quotes I highlighted from the book!)

Ava had really no backbone when it came to Hugo. There was no way in the world a man could continue to call me a slut and every other deplorable name and I just accept it. All to keep a secret of his brother being gay a secret?! The reason behind her acquiescence was thin. She rolled over one too many times for my liking. And the way she continued to fall in love with someone who was so cruel to her has me questioning her actions and sanity in this story as well.

This book came to me from a recommendation in a book club and I cannot for the life of me figure out why the women were so enamored with him. He was horrible and in no way, did I believe his quick turnaround after being such a horrible person for 70% of the book. The plot had potential but the MMC was too hard for my taste. Seems like "The Mistake" in this book was making Hugo so nasty that he was irredeemable in my opinion.

Happy reading!
