Mildred Lathbury is one of those eminently capable excellent women; she can be relied upon to intercede in matters of the heart whilst also planning church jumble sales. I liked that she had her own space and routines, and didn’t need a man in her life. People are constantly assuming that she’s going to marry any bachelor she spends time with but, whilst it clearly crosses her mind at times, she seems quite comfortable being single. She gets embroiled in other people’s lives and clearly enjoys being at the centre of dramas, whilst simultaneously being exasperated at why she’s being reluctantly dragged into other people’s troubles.
A nice gentle read which is like slightly high brow, post World War Two, chick lit.
