I have to say that it was a while since I enjoyed a good crime story, so I was delighted reading this one

As far as psychology goes, this could be read as a family drama. What makes a family break? Secrets, miscommunication, jealousy, bad choices. To what extent one would go to protect their loved one? Are you bad because you did a bad thing?... I liked this aspect and thought it worked beautifully, especially with all those gem quotes

When you shine brighter than the sun, it's hard for others to look at you, so you have two choices: look and be blinded with resentment or look away.

You don't believe in monsters until you're living with one.. and even then, you don't believe until you're looking in the mirror realizing you've become one of them

as for the crime part, I found it a bit lacking
You can guess who did it almost 50% in, but I still questioned the choice because usually, crime books would dangle the obvious choice in front of you only for it to turn around that it is not.

The reveal was not climatic in a way that the characters did not figure it out themselves. They had to be told by the end. Many obvious actions should have been taken but were postponed for some reason.

I found it quite weird that the mother, Laura, would have a POV even after she died in chapter 1

but overall it was an enjoyable read. It hooks you in.
