The Black God's Drums by P. Djèlí Clark
4.25
Excellent use of the form. The pacing was consistent, if breakneck, throughout; tension didn't have a chance to break, which was okay in the novella format. The worldbuilding was expertly developed in the length it had, and though I would have read more in this world, I didn't need to in order to feel satisfied. I had the sense that this was a sliver of a much larger world, told with an expertly crafted and convincing voice. Among other things, it was a glimpse of women's society in alt-history New Orleans, and both subject and style were heavily satisfying. Because it was so breakneck, I didn't feel a strong emotion other than "impressed"; impressed is enough. I'm on a bit of a project reading books about gods ("godpunk"?) and this was a good entry, especially in its demonstration of when characters can provide more fantasy worldbuilding than any exposition dump ever could have done.
