Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

4.0

i absolutely loved the prose — it was so so beautiful and definitely the highlight of this collection for me. some of my favorites:
  • “She’s like dough, how the give of it beneath kneading hands disguises its sturdiness, its potential.”
  • “I felt like she was seared into my time line, unchangeable as Pompeii.”
  • “‘I love you,’ I say. It’s the first time I’ve said it, and it tastes strange in my mouth—real but not ready, like a too-hard pear.”

I wasn’t into a couple of the pieces in the collection (namely, the Law & Order one — but that might just be cause i’ve never watched the show), but i fell in love w all the others. my favorites are “The Husband Stitch” and “Real Women Have Bodies”. would recommend esp if you’re into sapphic lit and magical realism :D
