The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf

dark mysterious tense

5.0

THE OVERNIGHT GUEST is a truly phenomenal read. Wylie Lark is a true crime writer snowed in at an isolated farmhouse where she has retreated to write her new book. Except decades earlier, two people were murdered in cold blood with a girl disappearing without a trace at this particular farmhouse. Wylie finds herself trapped within her house as the storm worsens and is haunted by the secrets within when she discovers a small child outside in the snow.

This was my first experience with Heather Gudenkauf's work but it certainly will not be my last! THE OVERNIGHT GUEST is a fast-paced and exceptional story that had me eager to keep listening to my audiobook to find out what would happen. This is a well-structured and intricately written plot told via three perspectives in different timelines. The characters are interesting and dynamic. The setting is isolated and chilling, adding suspense to the story.

I figured out a twist or two before they were revealed but was ultimately shocked by the bigger and explosive twists at the end. It was so well done, I absolutely loved it! I'll be looking into more of Heather's work in the future!
