Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett
4.0
I think this might be the perfect YA contemporary novel.
It's been a good while since I've enjoyed a young adult contemporary as much as I enjoyed this one. This was the first time I've read a book which explores HIV and I knew I needed to read it the minute I read the synopsis. Our protagonist is the incredible Simone, who is a young black girl living with HIV, two dads, and a diverse group of friends from a range of different cultures and sexualities. You know when you read a book where the diversity feels forced? Full Disclosure was the most authentic and genuine example of a diverse book. Not once did I feel like the author was engaging in tokenism for diversity points or whatever you feel like calling it. It felt organic.
This was sex positive, did a great job at de-stigmatising the impact of HIV on positive individuals, and explored all of these things with the best characters in the world (no, seriously... I loved every character, even when they were messy). Definitely, definitely, definitely pick this up. I'll recommend this to anyone who loves YA contemporaries, and even those who don't.
