The Temple at Landfall by Jane Fletcher
it was fine.
like... discovering the backstory of the world is completely different from what you anticipate feels like it should be a big !!! moment, but instead it's just told to the protagonist (and audience) straightforward in a block of text monologue. they don't even struggle with the reveal that the world is so different, it's just kind of like "oh, ok" and it moves on to something else.
like it wasn't bad just... you could see potential in the premise that wasn't executed well in the writing. that's all.

like.... it was just fine. it had a lot of interesting concepts but absolutely NO narrative tension at all. i guess if you're looking for a book where you don't have to be worried about what will happen to the heroines and just want to read a nice little story that's fine.like... discovering the backstory of the world is completely different from what you anticipate feels like it should be a big !!! moment, but instead it's just told to the protagonist (and audience) straightforward in a block of text monologue. they don't even struggle with the reveal that the world is so different, it's just kind of like "oh, ok" and it moves on to something else.
