What a brilliant idea - 40 slice-of-life vignettes, one for every year the Thames froze over. I enjoyed the variety of protagonists from priests to publicans, monarchs to workers, children to the elderly. Animals feature prominently in a few of the stories as well. An educational and well-researched read, which encouraged me to look up a few surprising historical events.
