”You are saving their lives for a life not living.”

There is something outside, something that as soon as you see it, turns you to violence. There are only a few survivors of it, and they have never seen it, Malorie and her children have lived in darkness for five years, barely clinging on. Malorie decides it is time to make a horrifying journey along the river to a place that is safe. The only thing is, she must navigate the waters blindfolded, using only her own instinct and her and her children ears to avoid danger, will they survive? One wrong decision and they will be claimed as another victim.

I couldn’t put this book down, the unknown… thing, only makes this book more terrifying. It causes so much fear in both the characters and the reader, you imagine all sorts of things. Imagine living a world where you can’t allow yourself to see? Imagine knowing there is something out there just waiting for you to take a peak? Every little thing would make you jump, every little noise, every little touch, would terrify you.

This book did such a good job of drawing the reader in and making them feel everything that the characters were feeling. It confused me, it terrified me, it made me curious, I really wanted to know what this thing was, a fact that if I was living in this world, would sure cause my death. The open ending of this book frustrated me, but in reality, if we ever got the answers we wanted about this thing, then the book would be much less effective. I am glad that this book didn’t rely on graphic images of so-called scary creatures to create a sense of fear, because the lack of knowing made it so much better.
