All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

5.0

Wow this book made me feel so many things. This is a super controversial story about an adult man named Kellen and a young girl named Wavy who begin a friendship that eventually turns into a romantic relationship. This book made me uncomfortable, but it also made me incredibly sad. Here are some thoughts I jotted down after finishing this story:

-I just cried and stared at the last page for so long after finishing it, that last line really killed me
-This story is a controversial one and it really blurs the lines between what we morally consider “right” and “wrong”
-It made me so uncomfortable to read at times, but it mostly just made me feel sad
-What a freaking story though wow
-Both of these characters have so much sadness and tragedy in their lives, it honestly makes sense that they would only find comfort in each other
-I like how the author wrote in the discussion piece at the end of this: “I’m asking readers to suspend their everyday perceptions of mortality and sympathize with flawed characters” and that is exactly what I did with this book
-These characters aren’t perfect and they definitely make some questionable decisions in this book, but that honestly just makes this story feel so much more raw and real
-I haven’t felt this torn over a story since reading Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma, which is another controversial romantic story where I felt like my heart was at war with my mind
-I love books that make you sympathize with situations you never imagined you could have sympathy for
-I think you can really tell when an author pours their soul into a story and that parts of it were inspired by their real life, and I found out that is true for this author after reading her acknowledgments which makes sense why this story feels so authentic
-I think I’m going to be thinking about this book and these characters for a very long time
-All the Ugly and Wonderful Things could not be a more perfect title for this book (and also I really really love the names Wavy and Kellen so much like I’m obsessed?)
