Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson

5.0

Caleb Azumah Nelson truly has a gift for writing. This novel is a phenomenal piece of poetic literature that really immerses you into the lives of these two individuals. The characters are both really well fleshed out people, but they are done so through the smallest of things, the mundane everydays that make up a person and make them beautiful in the most ordinary yet extraordinary way.

Regarding the writing style, the second person narration is really interesting. I felt like I was actually involved as the reader and it really pulled me into the narrative. The entire novel was super engaging and I found it tough to put it down. Similarly, Nelson really knows how to use writing techniques to his advantage! I especially loved his use of repetition, specifically of the same or similar phrases, for emphasis or juxtaposition. This book truly is a work of literary and linguistic art.
