The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss

Are my standards too high? Like my standard is literally just “no rape” and romance novelists are like “lmao! Did you say jumbo sized rape? It’s not rape if he’s hot, right?” (Spoiler: it is still rape).

Heather is a sheltered girl who’s uncle (I think it’s her uncle) nearly rapes her. She runs away and then is kidnapped by this captain who thinks she’s a whore putting up a fake struggle and so “accidentally” rapes her due to the misunderstanding. The next morning he puts together the pieces but then is like the worst has already happened so let’s just keep sleeping together and Heathers just so depressed that she just puts up with it.

I just can’t get behind a love interest that realizes he’s raped a gal and then decides “well what’s the harm now?” Gross.

And then he’s 50 and she’s a *child*.
