This book is a slow pace, young teenage romance, with cliches and drama and a lot of use of the word 'lad.'
Having said that, I just fell in love with Johnny and Shannon. This is totally a character driven book so if you do not like the characters this book won't do much for you.
I did know that it was a sports romance but the age of the main characters kind of threw me off for a bit. Shannon is 15 and johnny is 17. But further in the story , i really loved the young age and the innocence which it had. Johnny did appear crass and dramatic but his actions were so sincere and caring and protective. And shannon was just too damn cute. I mean I felt like protecting her too from everyone and everything. Not once did I feel as if she was being whiny or the innocent thing was getting too much. Instead it was so beautiful to read.
Johnny's ambition and personality was also something that I liked. He did have some cockiness in him but he was a good lad.
And the side characters were the best. They added so much to the story. Especially Gibsie!!! He is the best fucking friend that anyone could ask for. And I loved his and Claire's relationship.
And there were so many stupid and funny laugh out loud scenes, especially the one where Johnny was high in front of his parents and Gibsie and shannon.🤣
Also there is some issues dealt here like bullying and child abuse and miscarriage, so one should read about the trigger warnings beforehand.
