One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake
4.0
4 stars!
Well... this was an interesting follow-up to the first book.
I have so many questions. What is going on between Jules and Joseph? How is Katharine not ready to murder Pietyr? I guess she loves him that much? Are there no more low magic consequences for Arsinoe? How the heck will this conclude?
One thing we know for sure is that Joseph is still infuriating. I'm also not sure how to feel about the reveal of everyone's unknown abilities because I guess it's to keep the plot moving, but at the same time, I have no idea where the story is going anymore. I think the author wants to make the series about her morally grey characters, but at this point, Arsinoe and Mirabella are best buddies and Katharine is the only one that has a hint of this.
I think Katharine's side of the story is the most interesting right now- she carries the future of the queens/the island in her hands, and she's also been cursed or something like that? So it should be interesting to see that play out. I don't think she's been turned completely evil, and she still has a small sliver of her old self within her.
I thought that Mirabella was kind of annoying in the first book, what with her being sad all the time and thinking about sweet Katharine and her lovely Arsinoe. I think showing her powers and abilities more in this book has allowed her to prove who she is as a character and I think I'm liking her a little better.
With Arsinoe, I feel like she's going to be the one who makes it out of all of this. I feel like we would expect it to be Katharine and I would love to see Katharine become a super awesome character who deFieS the oDDs but we all know it won't be her because she's the one that is all-powerful but also cursed, and it's only the middle of the series so it probably won't be her. Mirabella is the one that everyone expects to make it out because she has the right powers, and she's good at it, and she's the compassionate, good queen. Arsinoe is the one who is being beaten up in every book, and now that she also has new abilities, it would probably be her to make it out because no one will suspect that it will be her. Anyways that was my rant.
Overall, not too bad. The action was great, but it wasn't like mega-violent as the blurb says. The romance was a nice balance but I can't decide if it slowed down the plot or not. The ending was a good lead-in to the next book.
