Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor
ALLLLRIGHT, I will be showering until the hot water runs out now, thanks. Book for the fans of The Devil All the Time, who thought that book could have been grittier.
Honestly, I'm struggling with how I feel about this novel. I lot of it was very much not for me, especially in the second half, but it's also insanely effective. At times I almost quit reading it, while at other times I was enthralled (which is also how I felt about The Devil All the Time). If you're considering reading Hurricane Season, I cannot stress this enough: it's DARK, it's a tough novel to digest, not only because there is a lot of nastiness and depravity described, but also because the writing style itself, the use of the language, can take some getting used to. It's a lot, and if someone tells you they genuinely "enjoyed" this experience - I suggest running in the opposite direction.
They way the story was laid was brilliant though: the way the characters intertwined, the way all of the threads come together, what drives these characters and how (yet again) dark and twisted they can get... It's great stuff, if you can handle it. The beginning and ending of the novel are arguably the easiest to digest, and they frame the story really well. But man, was this a tough read and often way out of my comfort zone. I don't know, I need to think about this one for a while. It's vile. But also really good.
Gave this a rating at first, but then removed it because it's impossible to distill all these things into a number. Please, watch this review by Better Than Food - he absolutely nailed it.
