The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
5.0
This is a hard book to read, not because of the style or the vocabulary, but because of the subject matter, especially as a woman. For myself, it was very eerie. It definitely felt like a world that could one day become a reality for women. The lack of names made it hard to identify with characters, but that was the point. I was forced to focus on their world, their situation, and what got everyone into this mess, instead of on their relationships. I felt a sense of fear and paranoia for the main character every time she made a tiny "rebellion." This is another book that wraps up with many questions left unanswered, and spells out a very clear warning, much like the feeling a reader has after Animal Farm, 1984, and Brave New World. It is a thought provoking book, and one I would encourage anyone to read (although you may have to take breaks to read something a little less heavy.)
