Cackle by Rachel Harrison

funny lighthearted mysterious medium-paced

3.5

I need more cozy witchy reads please!

Cackle is a quirky story centering around Annie, a high school teacher whose recent break up prompted a move to Rowan, New York, a lovely little town with a neighborhood coffee shop, a weekly farmers market, and a built in new bestie. Sophie is eager to welcome Rowans newest resident and Annie is flattered, and a little nervous considering how the townsfolk react to Sophie. It’s up to Annie to decide if Sophie is friend or foe, and if this move is the start of a new journey or a temporary hiding place while she mourns the past.

I love the idea of magic in the ordinary modern world that this story brought to life. Sophie was a complicated character-I loved her at times, but she had several moments of being thoroughly unlikable. I wish we’d gotten to know more about her past to better understand and relate to her relationship with the townspeople. Annie was a very realistic character with a very relatable journey of self discovery, but she was also quite immature and annoying.

Ralph was absolutely my favorite character and I much as I loved him, that is what kept Cackle from being a new favorite. This was a fun story, but I wanted more about the townspeople and Sophie with less self pity and whining from Annie. I did appreciate the overall message about making your own happiness and look forward to reading more from this author.
