Behind the Bars by Brittainy C. Cherry

emotional funny hopeful sad medium-paced

5.0

If I could give this book a million stars I would! I’ve been working my way through Brittainy Cherry’s backlist and only have a handful left. By the sound of this one I knew I would like it but I wasn’t sure it would be a favorite. Wellllll it’s a favorite!!!! This story will rip your heart into shreds and then slowly put it back together again. The bullying in this book is so hard to read about. The amount of times I had to sit the book down because it just got to be too much. Elliot is a small boy who is on the “weird” side and gets bullied often. Jasmine is the new girl in the school and is instantly popular. Jasmine is drawn to Elliot and tries to help him but it seemed like it only made it worse. Part one is when they are in high school and Part two is when they are in their  20’s. This book isn’t just a romance. Do not go into this book thinking that it is. There is a romance for sure but this book is so much more. The story is heartbreakingly beautiful and the side characters make the story that much better. The connection that Jasmine had to Ray warmed my heart so much. Jasmine’s mom is awful and I felt the hurt that Jasmine experience as if it were happening to me. Brittainy Cherry has a way with words that just captivate me! It took me awhile to get through this book because of life but I will remember this book forever. Remember to check trigger warnings if you need to.
