A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza

4.0

This is a beautifully written story of family life. It focuses on a young Muslim couple that move from India to America, which is where their children grow up. It is told in a non-linear fashion, jumping between the parents and their three children in third person, covering family drama, faith, parenting, roles within the family, values, love and even touching topics such as miscarriage, death and addiction.

I did really enjoy the storyline and the more subtle conflict you find in the everyday. What I struggled with is that it kept jumping about, often seemingly with no logical reason for it. It would jump between POV and place in time, then back and forth between past and present, even within the same chapter. From around 75% it switches to first person, as if the character is talking directly to another/writing a letter.

I found that jumping around very disorientating. As I was listening to the audio, I’m not sure if this works any better in text but there wasn’t any indication of a switch in the audio. For this reason, I’d rate it a 4 rather than a 5. I also appreciated that the audio wasn’t read by a basic white man with a terrible fake accent.
