A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley

3.0

This is the remarkable story of Saroo Brierley, also known as The Lion, whom was accidentally separated from his family at the age of five along with his slightly older brother Guddu as they wandered local streets and the train station searching for food and other supplies or working for small money to support themselves and their family. Saroo was only five years old when his brother told him he’d be right back and never returned. Saroo ended up lost and hopping a train. After a long journey through India, he ends up on a plane to Australia where he is adopted. There is a lot more to Saroo’s story which is full of hope and heartbreak and reunion after a 5-year search on Google Earth and Facebook that helped him find his way home 25 years later. His story is also a fantastic movie called Lion starring actor Dev Patel. I think this a revealing story about Indian and Hindi culture as well as tenacity, determination, dedication, and perseverance. What a great story with which to teach and inspire! The book is average but the story is amazing! And, I have watched the movie previously…it is very good and was nominated for six Oscars in 2017 including Best Picture, Best Adaptation, and Best Cinematography.
