Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey

3.0

I really loved this (what's not to love about a near-future dystopic wild west in which travelling queer librarians are the central badasses? What's not to love about kicking off Pride Month with a super gay Western novella?), but it left me wanting so much more. That should speak to how well-written it is, but if there's one thing I don't like in a book, it's too tidy of an ending without enough wind-down after the climax for it to make sense. This would have made such an excellent full-length novel, and I imagine it would sit between 4 and 5 stars for me if we'd had more time together. Esther's character development in such a short frame still managed to be believable and enjoyable. I loved Cye and am definitely on the hunt for more romances featuring a nonbinary person in the main romance, and I actually loved Amity a lot too, she was a riot. I love what this book had to say about living your truth in unprecedented times. The characters were already so intriguing and I could have ridden all the way across this new America with them. I'm sad I didn't get the chance to.
