The Duke Who Didn't by Courtney Milan
Did not finish book. Stopped at 32%.
I wanted to like this so, so badly, but I just wasn’t feeling it. I liked seeing Asian people represented in historical romance, but the pieces of the story itself just didn’t mesh well for me.
Chloe is obsessed with finding the perfect name for her father’s Unnamed Sauce to the point where it’s her whole personality. She kind of reminds me of Stella from The Kiss Quotient, especially with her strong need to always make lists and follow them. Jeremy was also one dimensional in the sense he really had nothing going for him except his determination to woo Chloe and his secret status as Duke. I get it. You want to marry Chloe and she’s too mad at you to entertain that thought. Move on. The list for Jeremy’s future wife was just…the worst plot point. It was way too heavy handed and made Chloe seem oblivious.
I also thought the backdrop of some weird village treasure hunt that apparently attracts thousands of visitors was just too much. There’s too much going on, but at the same time it’s all really repetitive and nothing actually happens. I know historical romances tend to move on the slower side, but surprisingly there was no slow burn here. Granted, the romantic gestures would be chaste in any contemporary book, but I didn’t expect it so soon in a historical.
