The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan
3.0
A 16 year old dead street kid, a Muslim Valkyrie, deaf elf, and dapper dwarf team up to try to save the nine worlds from Fenris and Surt who attempt to start Ragnorok.
I haven’t read any Percy Jackson yet so can’t compare but this book also follows a young person: Magnus the 16-year old sassy homeless lad who dies and gets sent to Valhalla. It’s written in first person with Magnus’ voice being very distinctive.
Throughout their adventures, the narrative is peppered with jokes, pop culture references and Norse god stories.
I started this book thinking this would be the coolest thing ever but it quickly became less fun. The jokes were pretty cringe, on a level with fart jokes. Some of the characters and actions made no sense. Like the goats. Pretty sure you have to break bones to sever a neck, btw.
It was also written mostly in past tense, like Magnus was writing a diary or telling the story to someone afterwards.
I imagine a kid or younger teen would think this was fun but my adult brain didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
