Dragonwatch by Brandon Mull

5.0

My kids and I were really nervous that Mull might ruin one of our favorite series with this new extension of Fablehaven.

We preordered it on Amazon and I distributed it to all tablets the day it arrived. My teens read it in a day, staying up into the night to finish. I took longer because I am old and tired, but finished it in a handful of days. They couldn't wait to discuss it with me.

We all read Fablehaven again to prepare, and Dragonwatch does not disappoint. We love Fablehaven, but I think Dragonwatch is written more tightly. Mull's growth and experience as an author shows; he's learned a lot since he first published Fablehaven.

Dragonwatch picks up not too long after the conclusion to the Fablehaven series (my boys were so worried Kendra would be grown up and married,
Spoilerand having unicorn babies, ha ha ha,
so they were delighted their favorite protagonists were still 13 and 15.) I loved the change in focus from Fablehaven (the place) to the dragon sanctuaries. Nothing about the plot felt hasty or tacked on. Sometimes when authors expand their universe it feels like a money grab? I guess? To be crass about it? This does not. It was wonderfully familiar but fresh and new.

Totally recommend if you loved Fablehaven. If you are new to Mull, I would recommend reading the Fablehaven series first, though it's not absolutely necessary.
