Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen

2.0

B grade book with a D- audio book reader. If you want to enjoy this book read it yourself. This is not a jab at the accent. The accent is great and what I would expect. The reader, though, (an older woman) attempts to do voices for the various characters and while Bem’s voice is described as deep, she makes him sound like a decrepit old man and several of the girls as old ladies. Just read normally. There’s more things you can do to represent other characters than attempt butchering the pitch. Audiobook aside, the content of the book was fine. Like the first one but there’s much more magical creatures that it doesn’t feel set on Earth at all honestly. Felt 0% historical-fantasy and only fantasy. There are higher stakes but it doesn’t feel higher, not when Simi is immaturely mostly concerned with the notion that Kola isn’t talking to her. And if I heard about his “wide shoulders” one more time this would have been a DNF.

I love the African mythology and godlike people though. However, for someone who only speaks English and doesn’t speak what Simi and Kola speak (I’m sorry I don’t remember what language. Igbo? Swahili?
