The Disappeared by Kristina Ohlsson
4.0
This was a great example of the Scandinavian crime genre - it's a little dark, a little gritty and comes to a crashing conclusion.
A cold case is reignited with the discovery of a body buried in a remote wooded area. The victim was Rebecca Tolle, a university student who had gone missing some years before. Investigator Alex Recht has never forgotten this case and now, in the midst of grieving for his deceased wife, he finds himself drawn back into this case and into the lives of the victim’s family and friends. Forensic investigator Frederika Berman is adjusting to parenthood with her partner Spencer, but returns to work early from maternity leave when the case begins creeping uneasily close to her newly-established home life.
Threads of this mystery spread widely, from the subject of Rebecca Tolle’s dissertation, a controversial children's author whose life was shrouded in mystery and rumor, to a secret film whose grisly footage hints at the existence of a dangerous circle and possibly, more victims. As holes appear in witness alibis and accusations of questionable behavior fly, no one is above suspicion.
The Disappeared is book 3 in author Kristina Ohlsson's Fredrika Berman series. Don't let that prevent you from diving in; I hadn't read the first entries in the series and it didn't impact my interest in the book or ability to connect with the characters at all.
