F*ck Off Squad by Nicole Goux, Dave Baker
3.0
Picked this up at Quimby's in Chicago over the weekend. Really 3.5, but I couldn't give it a full 4. I loved the art style, all black and white with washes of pink, although the pale pink on white made any text message exchanges in the book impossible to read. The characters were stylized and really cute, and I'm probably not cool enough to hang out with any of them.
Unfortunately, while the story starts off strong, there are a bunch of unfinished loose ends and the story just kind of...ends, in a way that really isn't satisfying and somewhat soured my enjoyment of the book. I really think this would have been better as an ongoing series and not a one-off graphic novel (maybe it is, but I don't think so) so you could get to know the characters a little better and give more of a shit about them. Also, the way Meg speaks is super annoying and takes you out of the story. She stretches vowels a lot, but stresses words that really wouldn't be stressed in a phrase: "That seemed to go weeelll" "She's fuuuuucking self-sabatoging again" "far be it from meeeee to pass judgment" - I can't hear this character's voice in my head because it is so weird.
If you're interested in a story about Instagram romance, lesbian skaters, and dialogue about why Worf from Star Trek is a punk ass deadbeat dad bitch, this is the comic for you.
