Scythe by Neal Shusterman
5.0
I read this book as a part of my challenge for reading books outside of my comfort zone. I never expected to absolutely freaking LOVE it. I never thought I’d see the day where I gave a YA dystopian five stars but here we are. This book is epic and thought provoking and so original and just wow. I like that this book feel more sci-fi than fantasy, and I am obsessed with this dark futuristic world.
I love the idea of this novel: that humans in the future have conquered death and everyone is immortal. But because of this we’ve run into a problem: overpopulation. Now in this world we trust Scythes to kill people at random to restore balance to the world. In this book we follows two teens, Citra and Rowen who get selected to train under Scythe Faraday to become future scythes.
This book was absolutely fascinating. I couldn’t put it down and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It has so many great plot twists as well, and towards the middle it begins to have thriller/mystery vibes as well which I LOVED. I love the moral dilemmas these characters face, and the way none of these characters feel like heroes or villains - but somewhere in between.
It was just so damn GOOD. And I actually want to read the sequel. I’m not a series reader at all so that’s a pretty big deal to me. I actually got the sequel in the mail today - I ordered it immediately after finishing this lol. Can’t wait to start it soon!
