Hearts and Bones: Love Songs for Late Youth by Niamh Mulvey
3.0
Oh yes. This is what I’ve waited for. When Emma Carstairs and the Blackthorn kids were introduced and heavily incorporated into the last instalment of TMI, I didn’t really like it at first. I’ve read that again since and came to love the characters.
Things I loved about Lady Midnight were:
- The ‘whodunnit’ relating to Emma’s parents could have dragged out for a trilogy but the question is answered and the villain is dispensed with in book 1. I LOVE that.
- So many different types of love explored. Hidden love, unrequited love, taboo love, platonic love, familial love, etc. And it’s all done really well.
- The story was great! Mysterious but with enough momentum and frequent developments that nothing dragged. I liked the Lottery and the dark rituals, etc.
- Mark Blackthorn. Thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing Mark back! I haaaaated the way he was just abandoned by the Clave and left to rot in the Wild Hunt.
- The flashbacks were worthwhile and added to the story. None of them were pointless.
All I need now is for Helen and Aline to be released from their exile on Wrangle Island and I’ll be happy.
Things I didn’t love about Lady Midnight:
- Cassie Clare has a habit of writing that characters get interrupted just as they’re about to kiss / say something vital. After the tenth time, it’s annoying and she does it at least once a chapter in EVERY book.
- lots of problems could be avoided if characters would just be straight with each other and say what they’re thinking. But I guess I’ll let that one go since they are teenagers.
10/10 though - loved it. Emma’s my new favourite.
