Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
5.0
Elatsoe was so damn fun to read??? And I wasn't expecting that??? Darcie Little Badger's writing captured my attention right away and I was so charmed by the world-building here--and Kirby! It was such a pleasure to immerse myself in Ellie's perspective as she tried to navigate her family situation and her powers.
The (paranormal) murder mystery plot here was legit my favorite part of the book. I didn't expect to get so invested in what happened to Trevor and how Ellie's went on about investigating it? Even more so when that came together with a bunch of magic and ghosts and vampires and stories about Ellie's ancestors.
I also really enjoyed all of the side characters! This was one YA book that didn't pretend the teenage characters didn't have any family lol I had quite a bit of fun reading about Jay and his family and then reading about how supportive and caring Ellie's parents were of her. It was refreshing and fit really well with the plot.
The ending was also pretty satisfying, personally! I liked the twists and explanations regarding the murder bits and how that was resolved. I did think it was a tiny but rushed? But the overall conclusion worked great and I enjoyed how it all wrapped up.
