I loved the short film of this story that was attached as a bonus to the Oscar-nominated shorts program a few years ago. The book version is just as delightful, with gorgeous illustration and a story that touches on the queerness of pre-colonial indigeneity. Honestly I feel honored to know the story of the Kapaemahu. The ebook I got from the library had a great audio feature that made the Niihau language really fun to hear. I appreciated the additional information in the book about the intentionality with which the authors curated the story into film and book form. Great for all ages.
