The Bone Ships by RJ Barker
3.25
3-3.5 Stars
I had high hopes for this book club pick but I was dissappointed.
Positive: The world building was super unique and I could tell Barker put alot of thought into the details. If we are a person who appreciates unique prose and and interesting storytelling style, this book could be interesting for you.
Negative: Barker drops you straight into the world with no build up or explanation and sort of expects you to learn all the language and terms through osmosis. I found myself not caring enough to dedicate my time to learn it all so just sort of coasted along on vibes which didn’t serve me well later in the book. Similarly I found myself un-invested in the characters, I didn’t really care much what happened to them and as a result felt a little bored throughout the novel. Finally, the plot was very basic and in many ways an afterthought. It would have been nice to see some interesting plot pivots instead of draining all the energy into world building.
I can see how some people would really enjoy this novel but it wasn’t for me, I don’t think I will continue with the series.
