Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

5.0

I absolutely loved this book! I would have given it a 4.5, because some of the science was above my head. However, I knew enough about science to know what Dr. Grace was trying to accomplish, and didn’t frustrate me or detract me from enjoying the book thoroughly. Thank You Mr. Weir for keeping us non-advanced level science minded readers engaged enough to not get frustrated. At least, I didn’t feel that way. I suppose some might have skipped it put down the book at those points.

The book employs time-jumping from present to past quite a few times during the course of the book. I have read enough reviews on GR to know some readers do not like this “device” in their books. While he certainly could have written it on one continuous timeline, I feel the time-jumping, added to the enjoyment of the book. It kept you wanting to know more about why Ryland Grace was in the position he was in on the space ship.

The friendship that Dr. Grace develops during the book is one of my favorite of all time. I certainly did not think It would be as compelling as it was, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

One last thought, I assume most readers figured out why Mr. Weir chose to name the main character the way he did. A little embarrassing, but I didn’t make the connection until half way through the book. This is not a spoiler, and it is never mentioned, but I was a tad excited when It dawned on me. If you have read the book and haven’t made the connection, it’s simple if you think or care enough about it. As anyone who might read this can see, I enjoy those little “easter eggs”.
