Illuminae by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff
5.0
Space, Artificial intelligence, warships, romance, action, suspense, deadly virus, zombies, all packed in one book. what else can you really ask for?
With the peculiar style of this book, the authors took a risk, and it really paid off. I literally had to turn the book upside down at times to read. it's simply the most gorgeous, creative and unique book I have ever read. It basically is a dossier- a detailed report of events that took place during the battle of karenza, which means you learn about everything through files, reports, emails, cam feeds etc. The book is filled with twists and turns that you will never see coming, and that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
"Are you afraid?"
"Yes"
"The energy never stops, remember. It changes forms."
"I am still afraid."
The conversation between the AI and our protagonist were so astonishing it melted my heart and made me feel warm, like the words were hugging me tight.
"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."
In 2575, the planet Kerenza recieves a surprise visit from a corporation called Beitech, who brings missiles and bombs for the planet where our protagonist, kady and her boyfriend ezra, lives. Kady and Ezra had no idea that their relationship wasn't the only thing that was ending, but their entire planet was on the verge of destruction, the moment the first BieTech warship flew over their head. when the first bomb drops, kady and ezra make a run for their lives and ends up on different space crafts, owned by two different groups.
The spacecraft (Alexander) ezra ends up in has a very sophisticated artificial intelligence. It recieves critical damage during Alexander's encounter with BieTech's warships, and when the AI wakes up again, it goes rogue, takes control of the ship and kill a bunch of people who were infected by the virus the bombs had unleashed. For the AI it was mercy killing not a massacre.
"Am I not merciful? "
In Kady's spacecraft no one has any idea what's going on with Alexander. Kady uses her hacking skills to figure out what her superiors weren't revealing. When she finds out about the virus and AI's malfunction, she decides to help. And That's how the adventure begins my friends.
"At the apex of callousness she found zeros and ones. "
It took me 3 sittings to finish 600 pages. I have never read anything this fast before. Loved everything about this book and can't wait for next.
