Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey

5.0

This book is something like a well-crafted odyssey. Carey's intricate storytelling and world-building don't disappoint. I found myself enjoying each part for very different reasons. I also really like how the author uses the voice of her narrator to play with the reader's expectations. It's a wild albeit long journey, but I think it is worth it. I like how the fantasy elements are sparsely sprinkled, making it more of a historical adjacent myth than a full on fantasy. The only fault, if there's any, is that with the number of characters needed to build this world, some of them, though important, are a little underdeveloped/it's not always clear why they make the choices they make, but that can be somewhat excused by the choice of narration, and even so, it's very few of them.
