All Systems Red by Martha Wells (book #1 of the Murderbot diaries)
5/5 🤖s
Oh my goodnesssss. I devoured this novella in a few hours and it was so good. The story follows the perspective of a Security Robot who hacked it's own internal protocols to be a free agent. While still posing as a security drone, it is contracted to join a group of humans on a research and survey mission. When things go awry, the Bot's actions are discovered: however, in order to survive, both the humans and bot must learn to work together and learn a bit about themselves, too.
I really, really enjoyed the tone of the book. Told from the POV of the robot, it rides the line of apathetic, humorous, and condescending of the humans it's surrounded by. Deeply uncomfortable with human displays of affection, the Bot nonetheless grows to care about the people it protects, despite staunchly saying it does not. In addition, the pacing is wonderful, the dialogue is sharp and witty, and overall it's a great ride. Highly recommend!
