I Swear: Politics Is Messier Than My Minivan by Katie Porter

funny hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted reflective medium-paced

5.0

I have admired Katie Porter since I first encountered her in congressional hearings in which she asked questions to officials they could not answer- even though it was their job to have answers. Then I found out Porter was a lawyer mom, Yale grad, and Cub Scout leader driving a min van- explaining why she seemed so relatable to me who is all of those things too. This book sheds light on her upbringing in Iowa during the farm crisis and her experiences trying to pay for school, her senior essay on a pork company and its impact on an Iowa town and her time studying with Elizabeth Warren, all of which shaped her view of the imbalance between the country’s elites and everyone else and her zeal in questioning the motives and actions in questioning corporate chiefs about their companies and administration regulators whose job it is to be watchdogs on these companies who can’t answer basic questions about their agency’s function. Porter is funny and self deprecating about balancing her family time and her congress time, about her appearance, her relationship with other lawmakers, and her honest to goodness commitment to being a force for good. I enjoyed this book and am a confirmed Katie Porter fan.
