Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro

Wonderful. The magic system makes enough sense to be satisfying without being so neatly tied up that there's nothing to think about. There are themes and ideas to mull over if you want, or you can just enjoy the action, of which there's plenty. The characters are vivid and flawed and loveable, the settings are clearly described and intriguing, and there are beautiful turns of phrase and poetic passages. It's dark and gritty and creepy and gory, and also beautiful and touching. Highly recommended.
