I love this memoir. It is so well written and takes you on such an emotional and funny journey, even with the SA subject matter. I love the way the author weaved her art/poetry/jokes/stories into the book I almost an avant garde way. This memoir is such a beautiful journey in processing trauma. It can cause you to see yourself and your past in a new light as it marks your life. The author does such a great job of communicating that to the reader and letting us into her thoughts and emotions. I read her second memoir first and it’s so cool to see the similarities and differences. I absolutely recommend.
I wasn’t sure about 5 stars because there are some jokes or comments that are borderline like offensive or too cavalier in tone for me, but I think the author is intending to be flippant and a bit ridiculous in style and possible just to deal with the tough subject matter. But the memoir is called “mean”, so the author in a sense has acknowledged this. And it would take a way from all the jokes to explain or have disclaimers (more than she already did).
