Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner
5.0
This memoir by indie rock musician Michelle Zauner/Japanese Breakfast is without a doubt the most beautiful book I've read this year. It's a heartfelt story of Zauner's relationship with her Korean mother and how the foods they shared are inextricably linked to her memories of their close but at times difficult and contentious relationship. She writes candidly about growing up torn between two cultures, about her mother's diagnosis and battle with pancreatic cancer, and then of her grief and healing in the aftermath of her death. This is a story that's beautifully told, with no artifice or pretense and without any hint of overly sentimental platitudes. Zauner has an incredible talent for telling her story with tenderness, authenticity, and disarming humor, and this book absolutely deserves all the praise it's getting.
