When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn
2.0
Whelp. I get why people liked this one a lot. It was definitely a lot better than Eloise's story so that heightened my enjoyment of it. It was refreshing to have a non-virgin heroine so she could actually understand and have an interest in her romance unlike all the previous heroines who were all stunningly naïve. Even Eloise who claims she had learned from the maids seemed fairly unaware... so Francesca was a refreshing change of pace.
I also audibly laughed when she mentions being the forgotten sister, because when i watched the show for the first time (pre-reading books) during one of the later episodes Francesca show's up and I texted my friends asking who the heck this random new kid was because I had no memory of her existence prior. so that was fun for me.
but once again these romances are plagued with mild to extreme emotional abuse, miscommunications and just an alarming amount of control. and what i can't get behind with these is I don't CARE if its "period accurate", having the man be so angry/controlling/abusive towards his woman and then being told to romanticize him just doesn't work for me. Michael thinking he would keep seducing Francesca until she got pregnant so she'd 'have to marry him' after she told him she didnt want to marry him was just gross. Michael screaming at her to the point of tears and running off because she wouldnt marry him
to then rejoice when she finally breaks down and says yes: isn't romantic.
the sex scenes are i guess what everyone is reading these for.... and this one is definitely steamier than the rest and really probably more consensual than most of the others so half a point for that) but there are so many better less-problematic romances out there???
and yeah I get it "why are you still reading these if you like nothing about them"
and its because i love the Bridgerton FAMILY. All their scenes are so fun and cute and i love that family dynamic. but these books were written far too recently to excuse the level of just gross control and abuse. You can write something in a time period and still make me root for both characters. so far they're not succeeding
