The Boat by SBS, Nam Le, Matt Huynh
5.0
Physically, I did not cry. But emotionally?
I've been reading webcomics for years, but never have I experienced something so immersive and artfully crafted as the one based on the eponymous short story, "The Boat". The art and layout moved with the story, making you disoriented, startled, fearful, trapped. The simplicity of the writing coupled with the stunning sounds and visuals created such a powerful experience that honestly, I'm still processing it.
I actually had trouble deciding on my rating for this. I didn't like the story. It was terrible, and heart-wrenching, and it made me mourn the senselessness of it all, the overwhelming rawness of what the characters experience. But really, is that not was a good story does? I was so drawn into the story and its characters that I was feeling their pain. The story was not nice. But it was good.
