Witch Child by Celia Rees
3.0
Written in the style of diary entries, this book tells the story of Mary Newbury: a young girl who flees England after her grandmother is hanged as a witch. Mary identifies herself as a witch at the beginning of the story, but not a witch as many come to know. She had been raised by her grandmother who has taught her many things. She understands the ways of the world. She knows the forest and plants and herbs. When her grandmother dies a mysterious woman helps her escape to America in the hopes she doesn’t experience the same fate. On arrival in America she gets along with the native Americans and respects their traditions. She doesn’t hold with the extremist Christian beliefs of her town but goes along with them for her safety. Ultimately she is a victim of other peoples jealousy and cruelty. It’s a great book, a quick read and an interesting story that ultimately shows the corruption men and religion in persecuting anyone different especially women, who may disrupt their own power.
