One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

4.5

Second time reading:
Rereading this was not quite as enjoyable as the first time, because all the foreshadowing and all the hints were so obvious this time around that I got a little annoyed at Elspeth for not piecing it together sooner. However, I still absolutely love this story and it was a lot of fun to reread it! The story is incredibly engaging, I think the worldbuilding is very well done and I loved the ending! So, I'm rounding up my rating.

First time reading:
You're telling me I need to wait 8 MONTHS FOR THE SEQUEL!? Mercy!

This was phenomenal!! The magic system was sooo cool and unlike anything else I've read. It's (likely) based on tarot cards, but there are 12 different types of cards that grant 12 different types of magic to its carrier when tapped three times. Then there are people who were infected by a disease which corrupted them, granting them "bad" magic powers. The worldbuilding was really interesting to follow, even if it was confusing in the beginning. I adored the main character and the cast of characters she ended up working with. I even loved the ending, for all that it hurt me! I wouldn't label this a horror book, but it's definitely a gothic fantasy!

Now I just need ANSWERS. The next 8 months better fly by so fast
