Desire Under the Elms by Amy Brenneman, Dwier Brown, Eugene O'Neill, Charlie Kimball, Paul Adelstein, Maurice Chasse, Orson Bean

1.5

Read for Theatre History.
I have to give O'Neill some credit for serving as an establishing voice in the naturalist movement, but I genuinely hated this play. I didn't get what the point of the dialect was, and it just made me more irritated with the characters. No one in this play gets a full character arc; Abbie exists to be demonized and oversexualized. I was kind of looking forward to this based on the synopsis, but it fell completely flat for me.
