A Scot to Remember by Angeline Fortin
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
3.5
"If the worst were to happen, she could go back and change it. Nonetheless, the trauma of watching people she loved getting killed again and again, was something she'd rather not repeat.

Donβt let this cover fool you/ put you off, this is set both in the early 20th century & today. The concept behind time travel back to 1912 to save her GG grandfather from getting onboard the Titanic was intriguing. Listening to the audiobook, kept on forgetting Tris as a burlish Scotsman (kept on thinking about Divergent).
"Tales of the tragic sinking has always fascinated Bronte...it has all resonated with her since childhood"
Not sure what it was, maybe the movie, but the sinking of the Titanic was one of my first obsessions.
By about the 50% mark, I was hooked as it became a lot more complicated and the reasons for her visits back in time included an added sense of mystery.
Still have some unanswered questions (maybe in the sequels) and felt the ending was a little rushed. There were a couple of times where Bronte came across a little dense (she goes back to 1914 and has to think about a war that might be happening at that time). Also, one of my pet peeves are characters having questions but deciding now isn't the time to ask them. Yes, it's always the time to ask!
"Who? Who are they? Scratch that, I'm not ready for that yet"
"War effort? Bronte frowned and mentally picked her way through her high school world history classes. Then it struck her...has that started already?"
If you're knowingly going to travel back in time, just think she would maybe do a bit of research before jumping back into history. Always thought WWI starting in 1914 was common knowledge.
Beyond her being asinine, it was enjoyable to see people from both times predict or get confused by their vastly different cultures.

"Women driving..The female temperament isn't suited for the mental strain of high speed travel"
"My father once told me love could make the strongest man quake with passion"
Strong chemistry between Bronte & Tris, appreciated how her modern mannerism (and fashion) contributed to their enemies to lovers.
"I will spend each day longing for nothing more than to hold your hand once more...you will take my heart with you when you go"
"Anything from the trolley dears?" Exactly like the movie...
"Speaking of seizing the day" Tris reached for his wallet. "we'll take the lot shall me"
